Is a food sensitivity like a food allergy?
Both allergies and sensitivities are immune reactions. Allergies are mediated by immunoglobulin E which gives the classic antibody-antigen/mast cell activation. Onset occurs in a matter of 30 minutes or less for the first reaction and tends to be dramatic. On the other hand, sensitivities are non-IgE immune reactions which can involve any number of white blood cells including granulocytes, platelets, IgM and IgA.
What is the typical management scenario for food sensitivity?
Typicaly we use the MRT (Mediator Release Test) test this accurately isolates which specific foods and/or additives provoke any form of non-IgE mediated hypersensitivity reactions. It is a common end-point, whole blood assay. This new test is patented and based on an innovative method of measurement of blood components, previously not possible. These non IgE mediated reactions cause release of pro-inflammatory and pain causing mediators throughout all organ systems and then systemically throughout the body, creating multiple symptoms. Examples of these symptoms include: chronic headaches, fatigue, muscle & joint pain, diarrhea or constipation, sinus problems, bloating, gas and other gastrointestinal issues.
Patients offen describe themselves as feeling “lousy” at best and “horrible” at worst, all the time. People who have been diagnosed with other allergies, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine headaches especially benefit from MRT testing and the LEAP program.
LEAP Program (Lifestyle Eating And Performance)
This program helps clients remediate these body wide symptoms of mediator release through dietary therapy based on the individualized results of the MRT test. Clinical trials, numerous studies, and client results show that clients, who are appropriately screened for this testing and dietary therapy, benefit tremendously with significant improvement in symptomology and performance.
This is a 4 to 6 week Program that includes initial consultation, MRT test, nutritional counseling/dietary therapy, and if needed, a maintenance program. The initial consultation takes approximately 45 minutes and involves assessment of your nutritional concern, by a registered dietitian, and determination if the MRT test and LEAP program is appropriate for you. Medical information is required and a packet of forms, to be completed prior to the consult, will be mailed to you or can be downloaded from our website.
